Eurochambres' demands for 25 May summit

Brussels, 23/05/2006 (Agence Europe) - Eurochambres, the Association of European Chambers of Commerce and Industry is hoping that the EU/Russia Summit on 25 May in Sotchi will help create a more friendly business environment for trade and bilateral investment. In a press release, Eurochambres identifies four areas in which European and Russian leaders should focus their work: energy. Eurochambres is calling on the EU to adopt an approach based on reciprocity: “the outflows of energy from Russia to Europe should be matched by inflows of EU capital and technology into Russia”. Eurochambres explains that this will require that the rule of law and administrative procedures to be respected in Russia; security. The private sector should be more involved in the fight against terrorism but should avoid impeding legitimate trade, underlines Eurochambres, which is appealing for public private partnerships to achieve this end; European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP). Eurochambres says that the implications of this new policy for Russia (which does not benefit from it: Editor's note) should be “clarified”; road maps for implementing the four “common spaces”. Eurochambres would like to participate in regular dialogue between Brussels and Moscow on this subject, as well as in the assessment of progress in road map implementation. “This would provide European and Russian businesses with a unique opportunity to enhance their cooperation in the interest of both parties”.
