New minister for economy, Padoa Schioppa, worried about country's public finances and will meet Almunia on Wednesday

Brussels, 23/05/2006 (Agence Europe) - The new minister for the economy in the Prodi government is concerned about the country's economic situation. In La Repubblica newspaper, the former member of the European Central Bank's (ECB) Board of Governors, Tommaso Padoa Schioppa, compared the current public finance situation in Italy to that at the beginning of the 1990s. At the time the deficit was around 10% of GDP, and although the figure is not as acute, it could go above 3.8% of GDP...
