Some MEPs feel Paris and The Hague should look again at possibility of resuming ratification process

Strasbourg, 18/05/2006 (Agence Europe) - In Strasbourg on Thursday, the European Parliament's constitutional committee adopted , by 16 votes to 9, a motion for a resolution (to be voted on in the plenary session of 12 to 15 June, just before the European Summit) calling on EU heads of state and government, during the European Council of 15-16 June, “to invite France and the Netherlands to propose a possible way to resume the ratification procedure” of the European Constitution, says a press release. The majority on the committee, chaired by Jo Leinen, which confirmed its commitment to achieve a “constitutional settlement by 2009”, called on the Commission to present a roadmap for the remainder of the debate at the Summit. The motion for a resolution also asks the Commission to present a study on the cost of the failure of the Constitution to come into effect on 1st November 2006.
