18/05/2006 (Agence Europe) - In a press release, Co-President of the Greens/EFA group at the European Parliament, German MEP Daniel Cohn-Bendit, who is also Co-President of the EU-Turkey inter-parliamentary committee, Joost Lagendijk (Green, Netherlands) and German Green MEP Cem Özdemir, who is a member of the same committee, have condemned Wednesday's murder in Ankara of a Council of State judge by an Islamic extremist, who injured four other people. “The recent rise in armed attacks, which has also included assaults on members of the press and writers, is a major cause of concern. The violence is being carried out by extremist elements bent on sabotaging the process of democratic reform in Turkey. The Turkish government must not be deterred by these extremist acts and must press ahead with its reforms,” say the Greens. The Second Chamber of the Council of State targeted by the gunman, supposedly a lawyer, recently issued a ruling against teachers wearing headscarves.
