ETNO re-states its opposition to proposed directive on roaming

Brussels, 15/05/2006 (Agence Europe) - As part of the second phase of consultation launched on 30 April by the European Commission on the proposed directive on roaming tariffs, the European Telecommunications Network Operators' Association (ETNO) re-states its clear opposition to such a regulation which could, ETNO says, destabilise a sector in which Europe is leading. ETNO is convinced that the sector is perfectly able to put the situation right in order to make the market more transparent and to lower charges. “Positive signals are already coming from the market. More transparency on tariffs as well as specific packages developed by operators are responding to consumers' concerns,” said Michael Bartholomew, ETNO Director. Telecommunications operators do not believe there has been an appropriate impact assessment into the repercussions on the economy as a whole and on consumers of such a regulation. Several representatives of the telecommunications sector had already rejected an initiative such as this at a hearing at the European Parliament on 4 May.
