Elisabeth Schroedter complains

Brussels, 15/05/2006 (Agence Europe) - In a press release, MEP Elisabeth Schroedter has expressed her annoyance at the homophobic comments made last Thursday by Wojciech Wierzejski, deputy leader of the League of Polish Families, one of the parties in the new coalition in power in Warsaw. The German Green MEP said that Mr Wierzejski stated, when speaking about the anti-discrimination parade scheduled to take place in Warsaw on 11 June, if the “perverts” start to demonstrate, they should be beaten up. In joining the EU, Poland committed itself to respecting human rights, written into the Preamble of the Treaty and the Charter of Fundamental Rights, pointed out Ms Schroedter. She went on that it was “a scandal that a member of the government can call for the fundamental right of freedom of opinion to be opposed violently, and for nothing to be done about it”. She has, therefore, called on the Commission, “as guardian of the treaties”, to intervene and bring those responsible for such comments back to their senses.
