Brussels, 15/05/2006 (Agence Europe) - With nearly 700 illegal immigrants intercepted off the coast of the Canary Islands last weekend, the Commission announced on Monday that it is to release 2 million EUR for Mauritius over the next few weeks. Benita Ferrero-Waldner announced in March that the Commission was giving its green light to the activation of a "rapid reaction mechanism" for this country (EUROPE 9160). With experts recently back from an assessment mission in Mauritania, the Commission is waiting for their report before taking its final decision.
