Growth speeds up in Europe - concern about Italian and Portuguese deficits

Brussels, 08/05/2006 (Agence Europe) - In his presentation of the European Commission's Spring economic forecasts to the press, European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs Joaquin Almunia declared that European GDP would be experiencing a “boost in 2006” and would reach 2.3% in the EU and 2.1% in the Euro-zone as opposed to 1.6% and 1.3% respectively in 2005. The spurt in growth is therefore confirmed for this year but growth could also increase slightly in 2007 to reach 2.2%...
