Brussels, 05/05/2006 (Agence Europe) - Benita Ferrero-Waldner, External Relations Commissioner, is to be in Egypt on Saturday and Sunday (6 and 7 May) where she will be received by President Hosni Mubarak, as well as Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif and Foreign Minister Abul Gheit, the Commissioner's services say. Discussions will focus on bilateral EU-Egypt relations, European Neighbourhood Policy and the situation in the Middle East. The Commission will also meet with the Secretary General of the Arab league, Amr Moussa, and plans to stress the EU's commitment and support for the protection of human rights and for democratic development in the Arab world. She will also be visiting the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Alexandria and the Euro-Mediterranean Anna Lindh Foundation for dialogue between different cultures. The Foundation, named after the Swedish Foreign Minister who was assassinated, was created in the context of the Barcelona Process in order to promote understanding and tolerance between religions and cultures in the Mediterranean region. In Cairo, the Commissioner is expected to visit the National Human Rights Council for a discussion on the legal and political aspects of the reform process in this country.
