Extension of fishing agreement between EU and Guinea Bissau

Brussels, 05/05/2006 (Agence Europe) - At the end of April, the European Commission adopted a draft extension, from 16 June 2006 to 15 June 2007, to the Protocol to the Fisheries Agreement between the EU and Guinea Bissau in Africa. The extension to the agreement (which runs out on 15 June) was agreed between the parties in December 2005, mainly in order to give the government of Guinea Bissau the time to prepare itself for negotiations on a future partnership agreement. The EU fishing quotas are the same as the current ones (in line with the April 2004 regulation, which also covered changes to quotas for the 16 June 2001 to 15 June 2006 period): - prawns: Italy, 1,776 gross registered tonnes (GRT), Spain, 1,421 GRT, Portugal, 1,066 and Greece 137 GRT); - certain cephalopods and fin-fish: Spain, 3,143 GRT, Italy, 786 GRT and Greece 471 GRT; - tuna senners: 20 Spanish ships, 19 French and 1 Italian; surface longliners and pole-and-line vessels: 21 for Spain, 5 for France and 4 for Portugal. The financial compensation to be paid by the EU to Guinea Bissau (before the end of this year) is EUR 7.260 million.
