Brussels, 23/03/2006 (Agence Europe) - During their recent meeting with President Josep Borrell, representatives from the ATD Fourth World International Movement discussed subjects featuring on the Spring Summit table. Therefore, mention was made of the Lisbon strategy and economic and social problems confronting the 72 million people living in poverty in Europe in both the north and south of the continent. President Borrell said that this persistence of poverty in Europe was unacceptable and affirmed that, “even though policies in favour of more growth and jobs are necessary, they alone, are not sufficient in the fight against poverty. We also need a stronger will for a more equitable society and an agreement on specific objectives.” According to an ATD press release Mr Borrell also agreed to meet a delegation at the “World Day to Overcome Extreme Poverty' of people, who had experienced extreme poverty, noting that this was “representative of his wish to support the need for these people be taken as partners by all sectors of society”.
