Socialist MEPs protest at Council of EU's failure to respond to claims about CIA activity in Europe

Brussels, 03/03/2006 (Agence Europe) - German MEP Wolfgang Kreissl-Dorfler (PES, Germany), Socialist group spokesperson on the EP's temporary committee investigating claims that the CIA runs prison camps in Europe and uses EU airfields to fly prisoners to foreign torture centres (see EUROPE 9142) explains in a press release that 'The Council has failed to clear this matter up so far. We invited the EU's counter-terrorism coordinator Gijs de Vries to out meeting on 6 March but he informed us that he could not come. Europol director Max-Peter Ratzel has not even responded to our invitation…We again call on all EU institutions and relevant agencies to deal promptly and effectively with our requests for cooperation.' Jan Marinus Wiersma, Dutch Vice-President of the Socialist group, said: 'We urgently need to discuss a number of issues that were raised with Commissioner Frattini concerning EU-US relations' (see EUROPE 9131). On Tuesday, the EP's temporary committee will be examining the role of European secret services in the CIA's activity in Europe. (Please note that in our newsletter 9143, we erroneously stated that the Director of Europol from 1999 to 2005 was Jurgen Storbek - please note that the Director of Europol is Max-Peter Ratzel.)
