Brussels, 27/02/2006 (Agence Europe) - Meeting in Brussels on Monday, the Council of Foreign Ministers of the European Union condemned the bomb attacks carried out last week on the Ali Al-Hadi and Al Askariya mosques in Samarra aimed at provoking quarrels motivated by sectarianism as well as the reprisals that followed, mainly against religious sites. These acts “compromise the political process”, the Council conclusions stress, stating the Union's support for the appeals made by the political and religious leaders of the parties to the conflict to abstain from retaliatory action. Calling on Iraq to unite in a spirit of dialogue and mutual respect, the Council expresses its full support for the efforts of the UN aimed at promoting dialogue between the different communities and at dialogue on a national scale. In this context, the Council welcomes the initiatives of the Arab League States to hold a second conference on national reconciliation with participation by the Iraqi communities. Furthermore, the Council recalls how urgent it is to set up a government of national unity and calls on all political leaders of the land to give a positive response to the “courage of the Iraqi population, which voted en masse during the elections of 15 December last”. This show of the Iraqi people's trust in the democratic system deserves to be rewarded by the “formation of a government of national unity that will work toward the economic and political reconstruction of Iraq in a spirit of reconciliation”, the Council added.
