Brussels, 27/02/2006 (Agence Europe) - German Green Helga Trüpel, vice president of the culture committee and media at the European Parliament, indicated in a press release that the parliamentary committee had unanimously called on the European Union to rapidly ratify the UNESCO Convention on cultural diversity. Canada is the first country to have ratified this convention, which, in order to be able to enter into force, demands ratification by at least thirty States, notes the MEP, who also underlined the fact that defence and promotion of cultural diversity was part of the main foundations of the European Union and that they are written into the Treaty and European Charter of Fundamental Rights.
