Role of press at next spring round table

Brussels, 07/02/2006 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday the spokesperson for the Commissioner for Justice, Freedom and Security (see other article), Friso Roscam Abbing, declared that the European Commission intended to organise a round table in April or May on the role of the press in cases involving racism, xenophobia and terrorism. Reactions to the publication of cartoons of the Prophet Mohamed by a number of European journalists is expected to be on this meeting's agenda, which will bring together figures from the European Commission, including Commissioner Franco Frattini and media organisations. Roscam Abbing explained that the round table would “examine freedom of expression and respect for opinions and religion, as well as the role of the media”. This debate has already been planned since September as part of the communication presented by Justice Commissioner, Franco Frattini, against the rise of extremism among certain Muslims. In this communication, the Commission touches on the different measures the European Union could take to combat violent radicalisation and the recruitment of terrorists. It highlights the EU's instruments within radio and television broadcasting and the internet for putting a brake on the diffusion of terrorist propaganda. Whereas some quarters support a voluntary code of conduct that could result from the debate between media actors, the Commission explains that there is no question of proposing laws that could limit freedom of the press. The debate on publication of cartoons of the Prophet Mohamed would certainly be one of the themes tackled on 20-24 February in Brussels during a meeting that is expected to bring around sixty organisations that campaign for freedom of the press. Commission Frattini, the president of the sub-committee on human rights at the EP, Hélène Flautre (Greens/EFA, France) are expected take part in the discussions.
