Brussels, 07/02/2006 (Agence Europe) - During a speech on Tuesday at the Retail Summit in Prague, Trade Commissioner Trade Mandelson called for robust defence of the Services Directive given the plenary vote of the Gebhardt Report at first reading, in Strasbourg, on 16 February. While acknowledging that the debate on the Services Directive must meet “legitimate concerns”, he said, it must also “lay the foundation for the completion of the Single Market in services”. Mr Mandelson urged for greater freedom of movement for workers within the Union. “There is little logic in wholly excluding public services” from the scope of the Services Directive, the Commissioner said, issuing a warning to those who would block the Directive: “Don't vote against the future”.
