THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/constitution/intergroup on peace initiatives

03/02/2006 (Agence Europe) - Caroline Lucas MEP (British Green) and Tobias Pluger (German member of the GUE/NGL) are holding a conference in Brussels on 7 February on 'Militarisation by treaty? Perspectives of the EU Constitution'. In a press release, the two MEPs point out that the 'Estonian Parliament apparently intends to break the period of reflection with its vote on the EU Constitution on 8 February'. They criticise the Austrian Presidency and the Finnish Presidency that will be taking over from Austria of wanting, in their common programme for 2006, to 'implement parts of the constitutional treaty in the military field in practice without the ratification of the Constitution… Amazingly both the governments of Austria and Finland, despite their neutral stance, seem to be in favour of EU militarisation and very close to institutionalised EU-NATO cooperation.'
