Commission extends "GSP+" to 15 countries

Brussels, 21/12/2005 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday, the Commission decided to extend the new generalised system of preferences "promoting sustainable development and good governance", GSP+, to 15 additional countries. This system guarantees access to the EU market with neither duty nor quotas. These countries are: Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Moldova, Georgia, Mongolia and Sri Lanka. In order to benefit from GSP+, each country must have: -ratified and implemented 23 key international conventions (civil and political liberty, human rights, employment law, environmental protection, etc); -correctly informed the UN and the ILO of the effective implementation of these conventions; -demonstrated that its economy was "dependent" (upon certain exported products) and "vulnerable".
