Brussels, 21/12/2005 (Agence Europe) - EU3 foreign ministry officials (from the UK, France and Germany) met with their Iranian counterparts in Vienna (Austria) on Wednesday to resume talks on Iran's nuclear programme. On 8 August, Iran decided to start its uranium conversion activities again, used to create the feedstock for making enriched uranium that can be fuel for nuclear power reactors but also the explosive core of atom bombs, but the last EU3 - Iran nuclear talks were held at the ministerial meeting of 25 May. In Vienna, the French foreign ministry said the Vienna meeting aimed to look at the option of a reprise of full talks. Europeans did not make very optimistic noises in Austria about the chances of getting Iran to drop its uranium conversion programme, even under the threat of being sent to the UN Security Council. At its 24/25 November meeting, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) governing council downplayed the matter, looking at a plan for Iran's uranium enrichment to be carried out in Russia as an alternative to sending the issue to the UN Security Council. Iran says it is its sovereign right to manage its own nuclear affairs, rejecting the Russian idea. The head of Iran's nuclear programme, Gholam Reza Aghazadeh, is quoted by the Figaro newspaper in France as saying at the Vienna meeting that Iran must come up with new proposals with the option of foreign public or private companies, potentially from the US, being involved in uranium enrichment in Iran.
