Fishing agreement with Norway

Brussels, 02/12/2005 (Agence Europe) - On 2 December, the European Union reached agreement with Norway on fishing quotas for 2006 for the seven fish stocks jointly managed by the EU and Norway in the North Sea. The Total Admissible Catches (TACs) have been revised down from the 2005 level, except for mackerel, and the two sides agreed to set up a cod recovery plan in the North Sea (stock recovery plans already exist for haddock, saithe and herring): cod (23,205 tonnes in 2006, down from 27,300 t in 2005, of which 19,260 t for the EU and 3,945 t for Norway; herring (454,751 t in 2006, down from 535,000 t in 2005, of which 322,873 t for the EU and 131,878 t for Norway); saithe (123,250 t in 2006, down from 145,000 t in 2005, of which 59,160 t for the EU and 64,090 t for Norway; haddock (51,850 t in 2006, down from 66,000 t in 2005, of which 44,835 t for the EU and 7,016 t for Norway); whiting (23,800 t in 2006, down from 28,000 t in 2005, of which 21,420 t for the EU and 2,380 t for Norway); plaice (57,441 t in 2006, down from 59,000 t in 2005, of which 55,820 t for the EU and 1,621 t for Norway); mackerel (47,132 t in 2006, compared with 44,879 t in 2005, of which 16,954 t for the EU and 30,178 t for Norway).
