Brussels, 25/11/2005 (Agence Europe) - Following their Summit on 24 November by video conference, Paul Martin, the Prime Minister of Canada, Tony Blair, the President of the European Council, Javier Solana, the EU High Representative, and José Manuel Barroso, the President of the European Commission, expressed in a press release their deep satisfaction with the scope and quality of the strategic partnership between Canada and the EU (see EUROPE 9075, particularly on the subject of the signature of agreements on the participation of Canada in EU crisis-management operations, on Canada/Europol cooperation and on airline passenger data). The press release says that the discussions focussed on the measures which Canada and the EU could take together, as strategic partners, to face regional and global challenges such as Sudan, the Middle East peace process, nuclear proliferation, “rights of the person in Iran”, Haiti and Afghanistan. The leaders also spoke about climate change, the importance of obtaining good result at the WTO ministerial conference in Hong Kong, strengthening relations between Canada and the EU on trade and investment, the reform of the UN and preparations for possible pandemics (including avian flu).
