NGOs and sugar beet farmers dissatisfied with sugar reform

Brussels, 25/11/2005 (Agence Europe) - Reacting to the result of the Council on the reform of the sugar sector (EUROPE 9075), the International Confederation of European Beet Growers (CIBE) states that the compromise obtained will condemn "120,000 beet growers and 80 sugar factories". The restructuring of the industry will lead to "unacceptable levels of redundancies in the regions which are already victim to extremely high rates of unemployment", states the European Federation of Food, Agriculture and Tourism Trade Union (EFFAT). The non-governmental organisations (NGO) Oxfam and the WWF have spoken out against a "betrayal of the promise to give the poorest countries unlimited access to the European market". They state that "fully free access to the European market may be delayed by 11 years, or until 2020, causing up to one billion EUR in losses every year to imports from the least developed countries". From the European Parliament, Marie-Hélène Aubert (Greens/EFA, France) states that the agreement of the Council will have "devastating consequences" for the poorest countries, the ACP countries and agricultural producers of sugar in the least-favoured regions of the world. The agreement will allow a proportion of national production to be saved, says Armando Dionisi (EPP-ED, Italy), who is pleased with the compromise reached.
