Partial political agreement on Media 2007 - Commission delighted with consensus

Brussels, 15/11/2005 (Agence Europe) - EU audiovisual ministers reached a partial agreement on Monday afternoon on the “Media 2007” programme, pending an agreement on financial perspectives 2007-2013 which will determine the budget (the Commission suggests EUR 1.055 billion, a “minimum” if goals are to be attained, and the European Parliament adopted the Hieronymi report at first reading on 25 October). Ministers looked at the main objectives set out in the programme on: - safeguard and enhancement of cultural and cinematographic diversity and audiovisual heritage; accessibility for citizens; promotion of intercultural dialogue; increased circulation of European audiovisual works and their optimal use within and outside European borders; and strengthened competitiveness of the audiovisual sector in the context of an open European market. Ministers agreed on all points, Ms Tessa Jowell, British Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, was pleased to note, pointing out, however, that indepth review might be necessary in the event of significant budgetary changes. Commissioner Viviane Reding, responsible for audiovisual questions, was also very pleased with the consensus reached, “on behalf of film makers and cinema goers”. “Media 2007 will contribute to cultural diversity and support one of the greatest cultural undertakings in Europe”, she said. Nine films out of ten cross national borders thanks to Media, she added, saying that this circulation will be strengthened with the digitalisation of films, a process supported by Media 2007.
