THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/iraq

15/11/2005 (Agence Europe) - Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, European Parliament ALDE President Graham Watson said the presence of US and other soldiers in Iraq was widening instability and causing more problems than solutions. Hs said the rebellion of some Sunnis would continue to disturb the democratic process until troops left Iraq and time had come for the EU to develop a common policy on troops in Iraq. Watson said he had sent Javier Solana a letter calling for a UN investigation into the Italian TV channel RAI's allegation of the US army using chemical weapons (white phosphorus) in their attack on Fallujah, violating the 1980 Convention outlawing the use of certain conventional weapons.
