Brussels, 08/11/2005 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 7 November, the General Affairs Council agreed to extend the current mandate of the EU police mission to Kinshasa (EUPOL "KINSHASA") for one year, taking it up to 31 December 2006. This mission, which was launched last April, provides a framework and advice to the "Integrated Police Unit" (IPU), under a Congolese chain of command. The objective is to guarantee that the IPU carries out its work in line with the best international police practice. EU experts have been deployed to various sections of the chain of command of the IPU. Furthermore, the Council welcomes the half-yearly examination of the EUSEC mission, which was launched on 8 June this year for a period of 12 months, and by which the EU provides advice and support for the reform of the security sector in DRC ("EUSEC - D. R. CONGO"). The EU will continue to be active in DRC in the field of the reform of the security sector, as well as that of disarmament, demobilisation and rehabilitation, the Council promises in its conclusions. In this context, it hopes to be able to approve the launch of a project on the chain of payments "in the near future", to support the modernisation of the financial administration system of the Ministry of Defence of DRC.
