Brussels, 03/11/2005 (Agence Europe) - On 2 November, the British Presidency published a statement on the 30 October elections in Zanzibar (since 1964, Zanzibar (along with Tanganyka and Pemba) has been part of Tanzania): 'On behalf of the European Union, the Presidency would like to make the following statement on the Zanzibar elections, which took place on 30 October. We welcome this third multi-party election (following elections in 1995 and 2000, Ed). It is important for Zanzibar and Tanzania to continue expanding their democratic space. Representatives from EU Missions followed the electoral process closely and we note the broad assessment by international observer groups that the electoral process was a marked improvement on past polls, and that it was generally administered in an efficient manner. Nevertheless, there were instances, particularly on Unguja, where there were irregularities and a lack of transparency. A number of observer groups have called for a thorough investigation of these anomalies. The EU supports this call and suggests that the early publication of all polling results would contribute to confidence amongst the Zanzibari electorate. The EU considers it important that all parties should act with restraint at this sensitive time, and pursue any grievances peacefully and through established channels, and in accordance with local laws and procedures. The EU encourages Zanzibaris to overcome the historical absence of trust between the political parties, and to contribute together to the national interest. This includes the elimination of poverty, the improvement of public services, the furthering of investment and the creation of jobs and skills. The EU remains Tanzania's largest multilateral donor. We will continue to support genuine reform, aimed at achieving sustainable economic development and political pluralism.'
