03/11/2005 (Agence Europe) - Belgian organisations Pax Christi Wallonie-Bruxelles and the 'Commission Justice et Paix de Belgique francophone', along with EurAc and Caritas Europa are organising a debate in Brussels on 9 November on the election process and democracy in the former French colony, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). A press release explains that with huge backing from the international community, DRC is organising one of the most ambitious and most sophisticated elections in the world, involving more than 19 million Congolese travelling huge distances in dangerous conditions at times and having to wait for days on end to be able to register to vote or to stand in the elections. More than two thirds of DRC inhabitants of voting age will be able to elect representatives in the next few months, adds the press release, listing challenges facing the elections and the transition period in general (armed rebellion, particularly in the natural resource-wealthy East, and restructuring the army).
