Strasbourg, 27/10/2005 (Agence Europe) - In Strasbourg on Wednesday, the Conference of Presidents of the European Parliament's political groups failed to agree on which of three finalists for the Sakharov Prize 2005 (awarded to individuals or organisations making a special contribution to the cause of human rights, minority rights and international cooperation, or extending democracy and the rule of law). In the end, the prize was awarded to all three: Cuba's Women in White (Damas de blanco), who have been holding peaceful rallies since 2003 to demonstrate against the imprisonment of their husbands, children and brothers arrested as political dissident; Reporters without Frontiers, an organising championing media freedom around the world; and Hauwa Ibrahim, representing women accused of adultery and therefore face death by stoning under Muslim sharia law in Nigeria, and young people accused of theft who risk having limbs amputated.
