MEPs urge end to persecution of Ethiopian opposition

Brussels, 14/10/2005 (Agence Europe) - Adopting a resolution on Thursday from the main political groups, the European Parliament expressed serious concern 'that the political dialogue between the Ethiopian government and the opposition has broken down due to the ruling party's stance.' It urges all parties to resume talks immediately and calls 'on the Ethiopian government to end the persecution and intimidation of opposition parties and to release immediately thousands of people who were arrested at an opposition demonstration in June.' The EP points out that the EU Election Observer Mission found that the 15 May elections 'were freely contested (but) marred by serious irregularities.' (See EUROPE 9016.)
