11/10/2005 (Agence Europe) - MEP Jorgo Chatzimarkakis (German Liberal), President of COMETIS (the European Institute of Technology in Strasbourg), welcomes the apparent progress of the project proposed by Dominique de Villepin to establish a European Institute of Technology in France (in principle at Saclay, near Paris). The FDP European representative nonetheless warns in a press release: “The Union needs more than a French MIT (Massachusetts Institute for Technology). It needs a truly European institute to gather and make the most of Europe's strength in research”. The French project therefore should not be to the detriment of the Commission's proposal to create such a European institute, and France should not ignore COMETIS' request to establish this institute in Strasbourg, Mr Chatzimarkakis stresses.
