Brussels, 19/09/2005 (Agence Europe) - During its Agriculture and Fisheries Council on Monday the European Commission indicated that it would not be presenting draft amendments before the middle of 2006 on the common organisation of the fruit and vegetable markets. This is the answer it gave to Italy, which had called on the Commission to act swiftly to rectify the crisis in this sector. According to Italy, which was supported by several Member States: France, Greece, Spain, Portugal, Poland, Hungary, Cyprus), more rapid and flexible special withdrawal measures are needed in the fruit and vegetable sectors, as well as in the wine sector (market products), as well as reconversion programmes, measures for abandoning production and promotion campaigns. Italy also called on the Commission to provide an increase in wine quality authorised for settling this crisis and to include fruity and vegetable in the action programme to help the unemployed.
