Brussels, 19/09/2005 (Agence Europe) - European Commissioner for external relations, Benita Ferrero-Waldner met the Sri Lanka foreign minister, Anura Bandaranaike on Friday in a meeting at the UN summit. She informed him of her concerns about developments in the country since the assassination of minister Kadirgamar (on 12 August) and condemned this “terrible act”. In a press release, the Commissioner warned that a moment of reflection was appropriate and that nothing should be done that could jeopardise peace or cease-fire between the Tamil Tiger rebels and the Sri Lankan government. In view of the presidential elections in December the Commissioner thanked Mr Bandaranike for his request for EU election observers and assured him that they would carefully examine the matter. An exploratory mission will be set up to this end at the end of September, she confirmed.
