Informal discussion at UN on nuclear issues

Brussels, 16/09/2005 (Agence Europe) - The Iranian nuclear programme was still the subject of intensive informal discussion on Friday on the sidelines of the UN Summit in New York. On Monday 19 September on the eve of the crucial meeting of the IAEA Governing Council which is to decide whether or not to refer the Iranian nuclear issue to the UN Security Council, the EU-3 (Germany, France and United Kingdom) resumed dialogue with Iran during a meeting on Thursday on the fringe of the summit between Foreign Ministers Joschka Fischer, Philippe Douste Blazy and Jack Straw and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. This first meeting since Iran resumed its uranium conversion activity on 8 August was held thanks to the efforts made by UN secretary, Kofi Annan, who trusts referral to the Security Council may be avoided as there is no consensus within the international community on this issue. After the meeting, the EU-3 foreign ministers asserted that they will await further Iranian proposals to be presented by Mr Ahmadinejad on Saturday, before determining what stance the EU will take on Monday at the IAEA Governing Council. Diplomatic sources say Mr Ahmadinejad has expressed his resolve to break his country's isolation and to continue negotiating on Iran's right to master nuclear energy for purely civilian purposes. The Iranian president nonetheless hopes that Moscow and Beijing will be involved in the monitoring of its nuclear activities. According to The Financial Times, the Iranian president is planning to propose “international cooperation for uranium enrichment” and will be inviting South Africa, China, Russia and Europe to set up joint ventures allowing Iran to resume its nuclear activities and allowing the international community to verify whether the enriched uranium has been used at all for military purposes.
