16/09/2005 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday, the spokesperson to the Commissioner in charge of Competition confirmed that the purchase of the Spanish energy company Endesa SA by its fellow Spanish Gas Natural SDG SA had "not been notified to the Commission". Referring to rules governing mergers, he stressed that if the operation had been notified in Spain (which is the case when two thirds of the combined turnover of both entities is achieved in just one Member State), the Spanish competition authorities must decide whether to consult the Commission or to refer the case to it overall. "We have every confidence in the Spanish authorities, as we do in all national competition authorities", added the spokesperson, rejecting the idea that these authorities may look on the affair with a less critical eye than the Commission.
