04/08/2005 (Agence Europe) - Javier Solana, EU High Representative for CFSP, wrote to President Bakiyev on Thursday thanking the Kyrgyz authorities for having cooperated with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in transferring 439 Uzbeks to a third country (Romania). The Uzbeks had fled their country in the aftermath of the violence in Andijan and taken refuge in Kyrgyzstan. Mr Solana also expressed his concern for the fate of 15 refugees who “still remain in detention in Kyrgyzstan”. In a press release, the High Representative states he is confident that the Kyrgyz government will respect its international commitments and “in particular the UN Convention on Refugees and the UN Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment”.
