04/08/2005 (Agence Europe) - MEP Caroline Lucas has called on the UK to scrap its Trident nuclear weapons programme as a tribute to the victims of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima on 6 August 1945, causing 70,000 deaths (the number of victims of the first atomic bomb and of its after-effects were 200,000 at the end of the 20th century). The British Green member, who belongs to the European Parliament's Peace Initiatives Group and to the British national council of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, stresses in a press release that she fully backs the international ”Mayors for Peace” initiative, led by the mayors of 650 cities around the world in favour of nuclear-free world by 2020 (http://www.abolition2000europe.org ). Caroline Lucas says we are all at risk “until we put the genie back in the bottle”, warning: “Tony Blair cannot hope to persuade states such as Iran and North Korea to abandon their nuclear ambitions whilst the UK maintains and updates its own nuclear arsenal”.
