Jo Leinen shocked by John Bolton's appointment

Brussels, 04/08/2005 (Agence Europe) - According to Jo Leinen, German Social Democrat and Chair of the Constitutional Affairs Committee and member of the EU/UN working group at the European Parliament, the appointment of John Bolton to the post of new US ambassador with the United Nations is “an insult to the partners of the global community”. Mr Bolton is known to uphold “the unilateralism of US super power” and as a destroyer of the Kyoto Protocol and the International Criminal Court, the MEP recalls, deploring that “this does not augur well for UN reform awaited for the autumn”. Jo Leinen, therefore, stresses that this is yet one more reason for the European Union to coordinate its policy concerning the United Nations more closely than ever (see EUROPE 9001 on the subject of EU Council priorities for the UN summit in New York in September, and also EUROPE 8967 on the Laschet report adopted by the EP). An earlier statement by Ambassador Bolton on the subject of the UN was taken up by The Times of London: “There is no such thing as the United Nations”. In 2000, Mr Bolton said: “If I were redoing the Security Council today, I'd have one permanent member because that's the real reflection of the distribution of power in the world”.
