Brussels, 06/07/2005 (Agence Europe) - The organisation “Les Rencontres” is holding several seminars in July in Avignon on cultural themes. The first, entitled “The meeting of European capitals of culture” will take place on 11 July. It will bring together elected representatives and professionals from the “European capitals of culture” past, present and candidates for a day of exchanges of experience, discussions on future prospects, and reflection on the multiple dimensions (cultural, political and European) of this renewed programme, which will soon be submitted to the European Parliament and Council of Ministers for approval. On 17 July, artists and cultural and political leaders will come to discuss the issue “Mobility of artists and movement of works in Europe”. Finally, at a meeting entitled “The regions of Europe and culture” on 19 July, professionals and artists will be called on to reflect on the development of the new and ever-increasing role played by the regions in developing a European cultural policy. Participants will tackle problems of regional intervention in the sectors of literature, cinema and live performance, and also cross-cutting issues such as the future of the structural funds in an enlarged Europe or the redefinition of the role of the regions in relation to European and state institutions and other levels of national authority.
