05/07/2005 (Agence Europe) - The President of the Senator of Belgium, the Socialist Anne-Marie Lizin presented her report on Guantánamo to the Parliamentary Assembly of the OSCE, of which she is a member, in Washington on 4 July. She had been tasked by the President of the Assembly, American Democrat Alcee Hastings, to write this report. Ms Lizin, who was not allowed by the American authorities to visit Guantánamo, recommends that the detention centre be gradually shut down, allowing the detainees (some 520 of them) to be judged either in their country of origin (there are still nearly 300 Afghan citizens), or before the American courts. Ms Lizin had previously submitted a copy of this report to vice president Dick Cheney at a meeting at the White House on 1 July.
