Brussels, 16/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - At the pre-European Council summit of the European People's Party (EPP), which was held in Meise on 16 June and was attended by Wilfried Martens, the president of the party, Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel told the press that he was not overly keen on the expression "break" in the ratification process of the European Constitution. Taking a break means "stopping and thinking about the nice weather", he joked, adding: let's talk instead about an "active phase of cooperation and raising awareness among the public". Chancellor Schüssel and the president of the EPP-ED group in the European Parliament, Hans-Gert Pöttering, hoped to play down the consequences of the European Council failing to reach agreement on the financial perspectives. If we find a solution tomorrow, it will be "a miracle", said Mr Schüssel. In this negotiation, we need "everyone to move" (a view shared by President Barosso, who took part in this summit).
