Martin Schulz calls for solidarity

Brussels, 16/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - “The best way to escape from the current crisis is to show solidarity between our countries. It is important for this summit to find a compromise on the future financing of the EU” although, “up to now governments have simply been making demands”, Martin Schulz, President of the Socialist Group at the European Parliament, told the Heads of State and Government meeting at their top-level meeting. “The European Parliament and the Commission have done their job. They have presented a sensible financial framework”, the MEP recalls, urging Member States to “abandon their unbearable, destructive, national egoism” and “stop using Brussels as a scapegoat”. On the subject of the Constitution, the German Social Democrat said that each Member State must have the right to decide how to proceed, but that, even if one marks a pause, the ambitions set out in the Constitution remain valid.
