Daniel Cohn-Bendit and Monica Frassoni give warning

Brussels, 16/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - The European Council runs the risk of tackling negotiations on the financial perspectives in the same way as negotiations were conducted in Nice (…) The Heads of State and Government are to guarantee political “success” and will, consequently, seek to reach a compromise at any price as was the case at the time of the Nice Treaty, the co-presidents of the Greens/EFA Group at the European Parliament, Daniel Cohn-Bendit and Monica Frassoni, warn in a press release. In their view, it is now necessary to “show proof of courage by facing up to the fundamental problems” and putting everything on the table, including the British rebate and Common Agricultural Policy. It is also necessary to “break with the taboos concerning funding sources”, they say, suggesting a system of European loans or funding mechanisms, “a harmonised company tax” or a tax on kerosene. On the subject of the European Constitution, they assert that EP Greens still support it as a practical compromise. In their view, if the Summit were to decide on a moratorium, the time thus made available should be used to discuss European economic and social policies within a broad European forum.
