Hélène Flautre criticises cooperation with Libya

Brussels, 16/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - On the initiative of MEPs: Hélène Flautre (Greens, France, president of the human rights sub-committee, Adeline Hazan (PES, France) and Giovanni Fava (PES, Italy), the International Federation of Human Rights (IFHR) presented to the press on Wednesday, the results of an international investigation mission, “Right of Asylum in Italy: access to procedures and the treatment of asylum seekers”. Claire Rodier, co-author of the report believes that “the rights of foreigners and asylum seekers are not being respected in Italy today”. She alludes to the collective deportations to Libya from the island of Lampedusa in October 2004 and March 2005. Flautre says that all Member States should abstain from collective expulsions of asylum seekers and “irregular immigrants” to Libya. Commenting on the recent JHA Council decision (EUROPE 8961) launched with cooperation against illegal immigration. Flautre is afraid that Italy sees an “encouraging” sign in its current policy, when it should really be “condemned” for its attacks on rights of asylum.
