Laurent Piau maintains that FIFA's governance of footballing agents' activities is incompatible with European law

Luxembourg, 13/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - Laurent Piau has called upon the European Court of Justice to overturn the ruling by the European Court of First Instance of 25 January 2005, which states that FIFA's governance of the activities of professional footballers' agents does not run counter to European competition law (EUROPE 8875). Laurent Piau, who wanted to get into the profession but came up against FIFA's refusal, feels that in the absence of an inquiry by the European Commission, the European Court was not in a position to rule in its stead that there was no abuse of dominant position. The Court of First Instance, therefore, has committed an error of law and its ruling must be overturned, he claims. Laurent Piau complained to the Commission about FIFA in 1998, as it felt that its rules on access to the profession were not transparent enough. He also spoke out against a lack of appeal and recourse avenues open against FIFA decisions. The Commission rejected his claims in April 2002, as it felt that changes made by FIFA to its regulations had removed its main anti-competitive elements.
