13/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - At its congress last Thursday in Rome, the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) announced that it would be in charge of the new European COUNTERACT project for strengthening security in European level public transport. By involving the key actors in transport and energy with security experts, the project aims to asses and propose economically optimal solutions to national security agencies enabling them to improve passenger and infrastructure security. After signing a common declaration on fighting terrorism in public transport, on 4 June 2004 in Geneva, with the (UIC) International Union of Railways, the UITP set up an experts' group on security issues (EUROPE 8727): (http: //http://www.uitp.com/rome2005/RMR/en/Backgrounders-txt.cfm?file=/2005/06/security-en.cfm&id=70 ).
