Strasbourg, 08/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - Italian MEP (Alleanza Nazionale) Christiane Muscardini declared on Wednesday that the ECB's economic policy was leading Europe into an impasse and had to be reformed. During a press conference she called for a genuine policy for the economy. According to Muscardini the passage to the euro was done “quite rashly” and now needed a “follow-up and surveillance to see whether the transition from national currency to the euro caused an increase in the cost of living”. The co-president of the Union for a Europe of Nations (UEN), however, criticised the demonsiation of the euro by some Italian leaders (mainly the Northern League: Editor's note). She also attacked those who were calling for a return to a national currency in parallel with the euro or linked to the dollar. According to the MEP it would be better to “restablish the link between their mouths and their brains”.
