Brussels, 08/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - The represnettives of the EU and the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) are to meet on 9 June in Brussels for a first meeting of this kind, in the context of EU-OPEC energy dialogue. On this occasion, the representatives of the EU and OPEC will discuss recent developments and long-term prospects of oil markets. They will also tackle the main themes of cooperation between the two parties and explore possibilities for establishing structured EU-OPEC dialogue and close cooperation, mainly in the field of energy technology. The EU above all hopes to make known to oil producing countries the need to improve oil market transparency to avoid speculation, restrict price volatility and ensure greater stability. Taking part at the meeting for the EU were the Luxembourg Minister for the Economy and Council President, Jeannot Krecké; British Energy Minister Malcolm Wicks; the Dutch Minister for the Economy, Laurens Jan Brinkhorst; and Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs. For the petroleum producing countries there were: the Kuwaiti Minister for Energy and President-in-Office of the OPEC, Sheik Ahmed Fahd Al Sabah, as well as the adviser on energy issues for Nigeria (a country that will hold the next OPEC presidency), Edmund Daukoru.
