Brussels, 08/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson attended a meeting in Cairo, on Wednesday, of African Union (AU) trade ministers, on the subject of WTO multilateral talks on the Doha Round. In a press release published before the meeting, Mr Mandelson stressed the importance that the EU attaches to the development targets of the Doha Round, which, he says, may become the “Round for Africa”. The Commissioner also called on African countries to support the proposals on the table regarding trade facilitation (simplification of customs and commercial procedures) which, he believes, may “considerably increase the developing countries' trading capacity”. “This Round can only work if developing countries gain from it. I am determined to see this happens”, he said.
