THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/nato/bosnia

08/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - On 3 June, the commanders of European Union and NATO forces in Bosnia-Herzegovina ordered the chief of staff of the Serbian forces in Bosnia, General Djukic, to stand down. General David Leakey, commander of EUFOR, and General Stephen Schook, commander of the NATO mission, said in a joint statement that they had "ordered General Djukic's dismissal", as he was found to be "responsible" for the situation which, on 16 April, led over 500 Bosnian Serb recruits to boo the Bosnian national anthem and refuse to pledge allegiance to the Bosnian state. The EU High Representative for External Policy, Javier Solana, "fully supported" the decision of the two commanders of EUFOR and of NATO. He said that "General Djukic should be held responsible" for these events, and for the lack of reaction on the part of the Bosnian Serb command, which should have "acted quickly to restore the loyalty of the Bosnian Serb State to the Constitution of Bosnia-Herzegovina".
