June council could revise level of cooperation with Zagreb and ICTFY following Del Ponte's field visit

Brussels, 23/05/2005 (Agence Europe) - As part of the preparations for the European Council of 16-17 June, EU foreign affairs ministers meeting on Monday for the General Affairs Council held a brief exchange of views on prospects for opening accession negotiations with Croatian. Austrian minister, Ursula Plassnik asked where the presidency was in the work on the “Task Forces” on Croatia and whether the question could ever be unblocked in June. The president of the Council Jean Asselborn indicated to ministers that the Prosecutor General of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTFY), Carla del Ponte, would be in Zagreb in June and that she would meet him on 16 June to assess the situation and state of play in the implementation of the Croatian government's action plan recently presented in reply to EU demands regarding cooperation with the ICTFY. If Del Ponte's judgement after her visit to Zagreb is positive, the General Affairs Council of 13 June could restart the case and possibly, decide to give the go-ahead to accession negotiations, explained Asselborn (according to diplomats).
